In 1 Samuel 29, David was ready to go into battle with the Philistines, but the Philistine commanders rejected him. David probably wondered why they would not allow him to fight. This could have felt like rejection, disappointment, or an opportunity being taken away.

That closed door protected David from being placed in a situation where he would have to fight against Israel. That rejection was actually God’s protection.

Sometimes we pray for a door to open, but God closes it instead. We may wonder, “Why, Lord?” This teaches us that not every closed door is punishment, failure, or rejection from God. God closes a door because He knows where it will lead. We see only what is happening today, but God sees the entire picture.

There may be times when we pray for a relationship, an opportunity, a plan, or a dream, and God allows the door to remain closed. We may feel hurt or confused. But instead of asking, “Why did God take this away from me?” we can learn to ask, “Lord, what are You protecting me from, and where are You leading me?”

David did not know the whole reason behind the closed door at the moment. He simply returned when he was told to leave. Likewise, we may not understand God’s reasons immediately. Faith means continuing to trust God even when we cannot see what He sees.
