When Fear Makes Us Rush
1 Samuel 13:13
“You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you.”
NKJV
Saul faced a difficult situation. The Philistines had gathered for battle, and their army was a serious threat to Israel. Saul’s soldiers were becoming afraid, and some of them were beginning to leave.
Samuel had instructed Saul to wait for him at Gilgal for seven days. Saul waited, but as the appointed time passed and Samuel had not yet arrived, Saul became anxious. Seeing his army scatter and the enemy approaching, he decided to take matters into his own hands. He offered the burnt offering himself.
Just as Saul finished, Samuel arrived.
Samuel confronted him and asked, “What have you done?” Saul explained that the people were scattering, Samuel had not arrived when expected, and the Philistines were preparing for battle. His circumstances seemed to justify his actions.
But Samuel made it clear that Saul had acted foolishly because he had not obeyed the command of the Lord.
Saul allowed fear and pressure to influence a decision that required obedience. His problem was real, but his response was wrong.
Sometimes God asks us to wait when everything around us tells us that we should act immediately. We may feel that if we do not take control, everything will fall apart.
But a difficult circumstance does not permit us to disobey God.
Reflections
Waiting can be one of the hardest tests of faith. Like Saul, we may become anxious when God does not act according to our expected timing. We may look at our circumstances, become afraid, and decide that we must take control. But faith means trusting God even when we cannot see what He is doing. Saul waited seven days, but he could not wait long enough to remain obedient. His fear became greater than his trust. There may be moments when God seems late, but His delay is not a reason for us to abandon His instructions. Do not let fear rush you into a decision that obedience would have prevented. When God tells you to wait, trust Him enough to wait.
Prayer
Dear Lord, Help me to trust You when I do not understand Your timing. When I become afraid or pressured by my circumstances, keep me from making decisions that go against Your Word. Give me patience to wait, wisdom to know what is right, and faith to trust that You are working even when I cannot see it. Help me not to allow fear to take control of my decisions. Teach me to remain obedient, even when waiting is difficult. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
