1 Samuel 20 reveals the depth of the friendship between Jonathan and David during one of the most dangerous periods of David’s life. King Saul had become determined to kill David, even though David had done nothing deserving death. Jonathan, Saul’s son and David’s close friend, struggled to believe that his father truly intended to harm David. He therefore made a plan to discover Saul’s intentions.

Jonathan and David agreed on a sign involving the arrows Jonathan would shoot during a practice session. If Jonathan’s message indicated danger, David would know that he needed to flee. When Jonathan eventually realized that Saul was determined to kill David, he warned his friend and helped him escape.

What makes this chapter especially powerful is Jonathan’s willingness to remain faithful even when loyalty to David was costly. Jonathan was the king’s son and could have viewed David as a rival for his future throne. Instead, he loved David sacrificially and protected him. His friendship was not based on personal advantage but on covenant faithfulness.

This passage also reminds us that God can provide strength and encouragement through faithful relationships. David was facing rejection, danger, and uncertainty, yet God used Jonathan to encourage and protect him during this difficult season.

True friendship is more than enjoying good moments together. A faithful friend tells the truth, protects what is right, stands beside us during hardship, and points us toward what is good. Jonathan’s example challenges us to become that kind of friend—and to appreciate the people God places in our lives to strengthen us.
