Saul’s First Battle Success
1 Samuel 11:6
““When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he burned with anger.””
NIV
Saul had just been chosen and publicly confirmed as Israel’s first king. Yet not everyone accepted him. Some people despised him and questioned his ability to lead, saying, “How can this fellow save us?”- 1 Samuel 10:27. Saul, however, did not fight back or try to prove himself. The Bible simply says, “But Saul kept silent.”
Soon after, Saul faced his first great challenge as king.
Nahash the Ammonite came against Jabesh Gilead, a town on the eastern side of the Jordan River. The Ammonites were enemies of Israel, and Nahash surrounded the city, leaving its people in a desperate situation. The people of Jabesh tried to make a treaty with him, hoping to save themselves, but Nahash demanded something cruel: that every man’s right eye be gouged out. This would bring disgrace upon them and humiliate the people of Israel.
The news eventually reached Saul. When he heard what was happening, the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him.
Saul then called Israel together. The people responded, and Saul led the army against the Ammonites. The next day, Israel attacked strategically and decisively defeated the enemy.
This victory became an important confirmation of Saul’s kingship. The people recognized God’s hand upon their new king, and they gathered before the Lord with sacrifices and great rejoicing.
What is beautiful about this story is that the same Saul whom some people had despised was now being used by God to deliver His people.
Saul did not need to spend his time proving himself to those who doubted him. God Himself provided the opportunity for his calling to be demonstrated.
Reflections
God has called each of us to serve Him in different ways. Sometimes, not everyone will celebrate our calling. Some may question us, underestimate us, or even despise what God is doing through us. But we do not have to fight back or constantly prove ourselves. Saul had an opportunity to respond to those who rejected him, but “Saul kept silent.” He allowed God to work. When God has called you, remain faithful. Keep obeying Him, keep developing the gifts He has given you, and let your life and your work speak for themselves.
Prayer
Dear Lord, Thank You for calling me and giving me the gifts and opportunities I need to serve You. When people doubt me, discourage me, or fail to recognize what You are doing in my life, help me not to fight back or become bitter. Give me the strength to remain faithful, humble, and obedient. Help me to trust You instead of trying to prove myself to others. May my life and my work bring glory to You, and may You confirm Your purpose for me in Your own time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
