In 1 Samuel 26, Saul once again pursued David with the intention of killing him. One night, David and Abishai entered Saul’s camp while Saul and his soldiers were sleeping. Saul’s spear was beside his head, and Abishai saw this as the perfect opportunity to kill him. However, David refused.

David could have justified taking revenge because Saul had repeatedly tried to destroy him. Instead, David chose to respect God’s authority and leave Saul’s fate in God’s hands. He took Saul’s spear and water jug as evidence that he could kill Saul but chose not to.

David then confronted Saul from a distance. He reminded Saul that he had done nothing wrong and had no intention of harming him; David trusted that God would judge between them and repay each person according to his righteousness and faithfulness.

This chapter teaches us that we do not always have to defend ourselves through revenge or retaliation because God knows the truth and can defend us. Sometimes people misunderstand us, accuse us falsely, hurt us, or treat us unfairly. Our natural response may be to fight back or prove that we are right.

But David shows us another way: remain faithful and let God handle the outcome. Letting God defend us does not mean we become passive or allow wrongdoing to continue. It means we refuse to take revenge and trust God to bring justice in His perfect way and time.
